Usually with Japanese denim you would soak them before wear to get most of the shrinkage out of the way. If your first soak is after 6 months of wear, the creases, etc would move - you'll get a confusing fading effect afterwards.
Even if you have a pair that resists shrinking, e.g. the LVC 1967 505 or some of the Oni's with poly-cores, it's still a good idea to one wash or at least soak the jeans before wearing them.
Some people do indeed wait a long time before their jeans first touch the water - but it's both unhygienic and bad for the denim, and further, denim is not meant to be worn with the resin still coating the fabric. The guys who make Samurai would wash their jeans every month - it is better for the denim, and probably personal hygiene as well.
